Bloody hell. If the John McCain that spoke with such graciousness at his concession speech would have been the same John McCain who ran for office, we would have a different president-elect. THAT'S the McCain I wanted to support. Not the Republican Party hack he was transformed into. Still. The across-the-board beating that the Republican Party took tonight is well deserved. Side notes - in my opinion the best thing about election night is when the erudite members of the news wax nostalgic. They brought up the point that it was in Grant Park 40 years ago that the Democratic Party fell apart. There was the comment about how this victory tonight is really a victory for Lyndon Baines Johnson and the Civil Rights Act. There was the comment from the college age voter who said that, even though the candidate she voted for didn't win, it was an incredible night. And this I think is the most important thing - even more than the historic moment of electing a black man - that this young lady could stand in the middle of Obama supporters, take her loss, and still rejoice in the electoral process - with no bitterness or snideness or hatred that has come to signify SO many in the Democratic or Republican parties. All in all - a good night. A majority of the idiotic Local Ballot Measures _seem_ to be on the way to defeat. Crap. The euphoria lasted 21 minutes. It's 11:20 EST and I can hear on the TV behind me that Gov. Richardson is wedging into the newscast to pimp his resume for Secretary of State. Hmm.. cheesy name drop about his international connection to Spain... blatant reference to all the Hispanic votes that helped him.. oh and by the way, he is hispanic also... What the hell. Richardson is an ass-kisser... but he's our ass-kisser I guess. |
